Mamdani and Polanski are hope

New York has chosen its mayor and thank God it’s not a Republican or a sexual predator – it’s actually a real person. I’ve been rooting for Zohran Mamdani over the last few months and think he’s a wonderful leader for New York. Love that for them.

Meanwhile, the Green Party is seeing an unprecedented surge of awareness and popularity in the UK. I’ve joined – never belonged to a party before, but Green would have always been my preference if they’d been on the ballot and I hadn’t had to vote for whoever obstructed the Tories. Zack Polanski is finally fighting the endless wheeling-out of idiot Farage with some real coverage of his own.

Polanski and Mamdani have a lot in common: young, progressive, energetic and charismatic (a little less on Polanski’s side, has to be said, but he is British). Neither is afraid of attracting the ire of the establishment, which in Mamdani’s case could have serious consequences: Republicans are currently trying to get him deported. He’s the same age as my little brother. He’s an immigrant, a Muslim, a New Yorker. A mayor for a new time.

Polanski is cheeky. I think in the age of pop politicians like Farage and Trump, meeting their particular brand of lunatic acting out with a smart jab is what it takes to keep some coverage on progressives. We do have to speak in headlines, we do have to be witty and sometimes outrageous.

The Green Party has always been quiet, gentle. Polanski is the biggest reason they’re making waves right now, because he’s decidedly not.

I welcome a bit of noise. I’m sick of the right-wing racket.

Am I right? Tell me!
