Fashion history mystery

Found this dress on Vinted – an orange, tiger-print, silky shift dress with a cool 70s-style collar. The listing said it IS 70s, but I was dubious. I’m always dubious.

I looked into the brand – Pinky & Dianne – and it was a fashion line launched in Japan by two American women. In the 1970s.

Quite a similar vibe from Givenchy in 1969

But I couldn’t find any images of anything from that long ago, only mass-produced 00s stuff. The little I do know came from a single page of information in Japanese, which also mentioned that the brand had been sold in the 80s and both Pinky and Dianne had moved on. Sadly, it seems there’s very little trace of Pinky & Dianne left.

So, dress shows up. The minute I open the bag, I’m like OK, maybe it is actually 50 years old. Any vintage fancier knows that smell. Damp, garage. Dead people clothes.

On examination, I can believe this dress is a lone survivor of Pinky & Dianne’s 70s dream. The labels look old, the velvet (yes, velvet!) stripes are balding and it just screams 1970s hip-cat cool-kid.

She’s in the bath now (I think the Japanese care label says do not wash but this girl needs a damn bath), leaking a little dye or perhaps filth.

What a fun dress!
